Indications/Uses
Adjunctive therapy in adults w/ partial seizures w/ or w/o secondary generalization.
Dosage/Direction for Use
150-600 mg/day in 2 or 3 divided doses. Epilepsy Initially 150 mg/day as 2 or 3 divided doses. May be increased to 300 mg/day after 1 wk. Max: 600 mg/day after an additional wk. Renal impairment CrCl 60 mL/min 150 mg/mL bid or tid. Max: 600 mg/mL daily, 30 to <60 mL/min 75 mg/mL bid or tid. Max: 300 mg/mL daily, 15 to <30 mL/min 25-50 mg once daily or bid. Max: 150 mg/mL daily, <15 mL/min 25 mg/mL once daily. Max: 75 mg/mL daily. Hemodialysis 25 mg as single dose. Max: 100 mg daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity reactions. Discontinue if angioedema, vision-related effects, renal failure or CHF occur. Peripheral edema, wt gain, diabetic patients, dizziness & somnolence, encephalopathy. W/drawal symptoms after discontinuation. Monitor for signs of suicidal ideation & behaviors; symptoms of substance abuse. Co-administration w/ drugs potential to produce constipation eg, opioid analgesics. Pregnancy. Not recommended during lactation. Childn <12 yr & adolescents 12-17 yr. Elderly >65 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Dizziness, somnolence. Asthenia, accidental injury, back & chest pain, face edema, infection, headache, pain, flu syndrome; dry mouth, constipation, flatulence, vomiting, increased appetite, abnormal distention; fatigue, peripheral edema, feeling abnormal & drunk; sinusitis, nasopharyngitis; wt gain, hypoglycemia; myasthenia, arthralgia, muscle spasms, pain in extremity, muscular weakness, neck pain, joint swelling; neuropathy, ataxia, vertigo, confusion, euphoria, incoordination, abnormal thinking, tremor, abnormal gait, amnesia, nervousness, speech disorder, twitching, myoclonus, disturbance in attention, memory impairment, hypoesthesia, lethargy, paresthesia; euphoric mood, confusional state, anxiety, disorientation, depression, insomnia; dyspnea, bronchitis, pharyngolaryngeal pain; decubitus ulcer; blurred vision, abnormal vision, diplopia, eye disorder, vertigo; urinary incontinence; HTN, hypotension.
Drug Interactions
May potentiate effects of ethanol & lorazepam. May cause resp failure & coma w/ other CNS depressants. Additive in the impairment of cognitive & gross motor function caused by oxycodone.
